10:16 am - Wings of the what?
|
I haven't had much time to play FFXI lately. Nevertheless, I still bought Wings of the Goddess on its release date - and then spent the next 48 hours trying to register the expansion. Square-Enix sure does hate PC users
The only thing to do in WoTG, aside from the missions, is Campaign. And Jugner Forest, for some reason, attracts a lot of Campaign battles. Who knows, maybe those Orcs really, really, want that butt-ugly fortification. So Jugner Forest became a sort of second Mog House for me. I switched to DRK because of Drain and Drain II - and in a battle where it seems like it's every man for himself, it seems appropriate.
Fast-forward to two days ago. After two solid weeks of doing Campaign trying to rank up from Holyknight and wondering why Llelweyn or whatever the Windurst campaign NPC is called is telling me to fuck off, I get the answer after checking BG forums (which I rarely read anymore). Holyknight is the maximum rank for now. Yay.
You know, would it have been that much of a burden to program Llellweyn to say "Hey, we're out of medals for the next rank at the moment. Do you want to maintain your current honors? Y/N"? Or was this all part of Square-Enix's diabolical plan to revive its fanbase?
FUCK.

10:14 pm - I haven't logged on in two weeks
|
The reason?
I capped all practical merits. With my merits capped, there's no reason for me to seek for merit parties any longer. Combine this with the growing trend of my linkshell to allow newcomers to lot and general weariness of doing X activity for the Nth time and suddenly FFXI just doesn't seem that fun anymore.
I haven't quit.

8:18 pm - Listen up you motherfucking BLM/WHMs
|
So you've decided to sub /WHM. Congratulations. Even though your worth is about equal to a PUP in EXP parties, you've made a good choice of a support job.
NOW FUCKING USE IT
The idea behind subbing "WHM" is the concept of "backup curing". I know "backup curing" is a strange and foreign concept to NA players, so listen carefully! You might learn something!
"Backup curing" is the arcane art of being a BLM .... casting 'healing magic' spells. I know, it seems pretty zany: here we have the master of the elements acting like a prissy WHM casting cure spells. But it works, because healing magic skill means absolute shit in this game! Yes you read that right: your pitiful subbed Cure 3 will heal, at most, 25 HP less than a WHM's.
Get ready for a more radical concept: backup healing does NOT mean waiting until the tanks are dead and the melees are fleeing to zone to cast Cure. Backup healing means fucking helping out when the melees are bitching for Paralyna or Silena because the leader was stupid enough make a 4 melee/2 mage party.
Backup curing does not make you any less of a BLM. It does not suddenly shrink your penis or make you a healing bitch (that title is reserved for smn). You can still cast nukes!
If you're going to be useless and not cure at all, then do the world a favor and sub SMN. Not only does it provide an INT boost and Auto-Refresh, it's also a "gimp player" warning so others will avoid inviting you. Thanks.

I made the mistake of using my EXP ring in a shitty party.
I hoped against hope that a JP party that had a WAR/BLU/BLU frontline fighting Eruca would work. I figured that by having two BLUs spamming Head Butt, this would allow the WAR to recast Ichi without being a giant fucking MP sponge. Not surprisingly, the WAR got assraped by the eruca after the initial 6 shadows, further proving what a failure WARs are at anything other than spamming Rampage.
After the first few mobs, I let the party know what I thought of them by typing /console terminate ( The end result: )

Besieged is one of the greatest additions ever made. The basic idea behind Besieged is that the Imperial Army is short on men due to the war in the Far East, so you're supposed to fill in as a mercenary. You can be certain that whatever the Imperial Army is fighting for in the Far East is fucking awesome, because there is no way in hell otherwise they would trust their national treasure to a group of drooling retards(i.e. the playerbase).
The Imperial Army did, however, plan for the playerbase's idiocy by breaking the key and giving it to five generals. The reasoning behind this was that if five generals with superb HP and defense (surrounded by numerous bodyguards) were allowed to die, then they might as well just give the Candy to the beastmen as a form of punishment to the playerbase.
So your server has won Besieged so many times people stopped caring, and everyone has grown fat and complacent on the 15% EXP bonus and the refresh effect. How can you snap some sense back into the playerbase and turn their ToAU paradise merit camps into CoP hellhole camps? The answer lies in the strategies outlined below.
1. When forming a party, be sure to get the people who aren't seeking. The best way of making friends usually start with not saying anything. 2. Go as a low level job. People who actually deal damage in Besieged are the first ones to get Perdition'ed. 2. Always /shout. /Shouting serves a valuable purpose - letting everyone in the zone know that you, the sixth general of Besieged, need a cure. /shout is also a valuable conduit for detailed strategy information such as "GET THAT FUCKING MOB OUT OF THE HALL". 3. Speaking of Generals, what they /say reflects their general status. So when a bunch of mobs are gangraping Najelith and she keeps saying "Swift and sure!", you can be certain she's OK and enjoying the surprise sex. 4. If you get hate, the best course of action is simply to run like hell. 5. In due time (that is, if you aren't still struggling with lv1 raids on Remora, Hades, or Asura) the fun really begins.
Beastmen Leaders
These are the GODS of Besieged. Their one purpose in life is to make sure people don't get their EXP/IS bonus when their respective army retreats. Your goal is to get these mobs to do a TP move in one of the corners near the zone to Whitegate where weakened people go AFK. Medusa - Being a RNG, Medusa has a tendency to snipe your dumb ass rather than actually follow you. Ignore Medusa and go for her more attractive cousin, Lamia No. 3. #3's forte is Added Effect: Doom, as well as a frontal AoE WS.
Gulool Ja Ja - Built for death. His Vorpal Wheel is his way of telling Black Mages to fuck off. Miasma not only dishes out Poison and Plague, it throws in Slow as a complimentary gift for those WHMs who don't have enough status effects to get rid of. Tyrannic Blare is the killer move; bypassing shadows for a great amount of damage. Consider yourself the ultimate champion of Besieged if you can get him to oneshot a group of weakened people with Blare. To top it all off, he has the best move for brushing off clusterfucks of newbs beating on him: Mijin Gakure.
Gurfurlur the Menacing ,sadly, got the short end of the stick when they were passing out TP moves. Incessant Fists is a great way of oneshotting people without shadows, but his buddy Xarhorkur the Claviger does a better job of that with his hammer; Head Snatch is slightly better as it goes through shadows, but it's only single target. The only AoE move he has is Pleiades Ray, a move where he shows all the world the true power of a pot belly by dealing out damage + every status effect in the book. The other two moves he has, Sledgehammer and Haymaker, are both conal attacks with average additional effects - Stone and Amnesia.
By and far the best move he has is Arcane Stomp. Arcane Stomp is an indirect recruitment message to all Black Mages to cure him. If he keeps using Arcane Stomp, it means he isn't getting enough cures, so nuke more.
6. All good things must come to an end. Once the raiders have had a romp, they'll warp out. 6a. If they actually manage to kill all the generals, the Hall's doors will open to welcome the raiders in. Your target is the steel floor grating leading up to the reward. If a mob crosses this line, mission accomplished- no more invasions, yay! Much wailing and gnashing of teeth will be heard; nobody wants to lose their precious 15% EXP bonus. However, you will be doing a great favor to the Paladins, Puppetmasters, and Dragoons by avenging their lack of invites.
7. In either case, be sure to /random during the closing cutscene. Unlike practically every other non-chat-related command, /random actually works during cutscenes. So be sure to spam it, and you may get an increased experience points reward!
8. At this point, you have two options: complain about your paltry EXP or /shout {Yawn}. If the beastmen have claimed the Candy, congratulations, you have given a swift kick to the testicles of the playerbase. Have a Ginger Cookie.

8:11 pm - yawn

Back in 2004, Kirin was a challenge. There was no hope for a PLD/WAR tank of surviving his aptly-named Deadly Hold - or worse yet, Stonega IV. So, he was kited while Rangers (lol) and Black Mages nuked away merrily. And the Osode was the best armor in the game - it had ALL STATS +10 for fuck's sake.
Flash forward to 2007. After a particularly embarrassing spectacle of teaming up with another linkshell to take care of adds, UDF decided to try dual RDM/NIN tank. For this run, I decided to come BRD for no particular reason. The image below sums up my involvement in this battle
That's right, I practically did nothing but sing Ballad 1 and 2. This Kirin fight was the most boring I've ever been to. The only time people actually died was when we were trying to get THF last hit (yes, I know it doesn't make any difference, but I'm not leader). For damage, we had 4-bard-song-powered melee hitting it, fuck skillchains.
Drops?
Everyone got their osode (now reduced to a mere WS piece) a long time ago, who cares.
PLD/WAR is dead. NIN/WAR is dead.

9:38 pm - The Version Update is here! (3/28/2007)
|
[Event-Related] The Chocobo Racing craze has spread to all four nations of the Middle Lands! More Information>> -The Aht Urhgan Whitegate NPC “Zasshal” has started offering discounts on Salvage permits for regular patrons. -The new mercenary rank “Staff Sergeant” has been added. In accordance, a number of new items have been added to the list of goods that can be earned with Imperial Standing credits. The following features have been added to the Mog Locker: Players can now expand their Mog Lockers to hold a maximum of 80 items. By speaking to the Aht Urhgan NPC Fubruhn and completing the necessary procedures, players can use their Mog Lockers wherever they may be in Vana'diel. *However, these procedures will shorten the length of a Mog Locker lease from 7 to 2 Earth days. A Mog Locker lease costs one Imperial bronze piece to renew. In addition, the remaining time on the current lease will be proportionately reduced. *At any time, you can switch between being able to use the Mog Locker in only Al Zahbi and being able to use it in all areas. If you choose to limit your Mog Locker use to Al Zahbi, the restrictions imposed on the Mog Locker lease will no longer be in effect. [Battle-Related] - Thieves may no longer "Steal" to initiate battle. A certain amount of time must pass after engaging a monster before a Thief may successfully steal. - The potency, casting time, and MP cost of the blue magic spell "Head Butt" have been adjusted. A new skillchain, "Darkness Elucidation", has been added. Executing this skillchain will award a significant amount of experience points. *This skillchain requires certain jobs to successfully execute. *Players must fulfill conditions that differ from the usual requirements for executing a skillchain.. For more details, please click here [Known Issues] - An issue has been identified with "Darkness Elucidation" wherein it may produce high levels of slowdown on certain PCs. We are investigating the situation.

3:49 pm - A story of skillchains and black magery
|
An Age of Beastmen Control Long, long ago, the lands of Middle Vana'diel held many adventurers. Fresh from the three nations with dreams of glory in their eyes, these adventurers desired above all to gain power, and to gain it quickly. And so they began the wholesale slaughter of anything that had a yellow name floating above their heads, crazed for experience points, with little regard to their fellow adventurers (except, perhaps, to ask demand a cure) Much shouting and squabbling over wild hares and mandragoras was heard, but nobody minded; leveling up was quick and easy.
However, it quickly became apparent that the mano-a-mano approach would not work. Soon, would-be lone wolves would find out that they would be engaged in long, life-threatening battles with a pittance of a reward to show for their efforts. Attackers would find out that they would have to rest for long periods of times after each battle. Magely types (Black Mages in particular) would become intimately acquainted with the pale blue glow of the Home Point. Thieves, lacking in both usefulness and desirability, would be brushed aside by any monster they dared trifled with. Both camps desperately needed the services of each other.
Partnerships of Perpetuity
And so, the partying mantra was formed. The White Mage could efficiently cure the Warrior, who would damage the enemy while protecting said fragile White Mage. Meanwhile, the Monk could provide healing skillups for the White Mage, while the Red Mage could melee and provide TP for the necessary monster-TP-moves challenge element. The Thief could provide entertainment by constantly hitting for 0. All members, however, had a new difficulty facing them.
As was popular in those days, adventurers camped on the blinding sands of the Valkurm Dunes. Members of all nations came together to strike down their most hated enemies: those of the decapodan variety. However, these creatures could not be easily rend asunder, for their shells were impenetrable to even the most skilled member of the party. Even worse, through a technique known as "scissor guarding", their defenses were boosted to the point where no damage could be dealt at all. The adventurers cried out for a savior while waiting for their STR Down effect to wear off.
Solving the Equation
The answer to this problem came in the form of a fire spell. Suddenly, Black Mages came to be equated as part of the party mantra. With their extreme damage spells able to quickly deplete most enemies' stamina, Black Mages came to be regarded as an useful part of any party setup.
Soon, the adventurers progressed beyond the simple tactics of Valkurm Dunes and Qufim Isle, and were introduced to the labyrinthine passages of the Crawler's Nest. One day, a party of adventurers came to discover that by carefully manipulating the timing of their Weapon Skills, they could produce a phenomena known as a "skillchain"; later historians would discover this skillchain to be "Distortion". By sheer coincidence, a Black Mage with little regard for his MP or enmity cast an ice spell. All were amazed at the damage dealt; it was a new enlightenment for the party. The tactic spread and soon Black Mages were regarded as not useful - they were indispensable.
The Snubbing
Time passed, and tactics improved. Then came the fateful day, when five black mages and a bard were seeking for a party. An enterprising Black Mage wished to find out if those so-called "Skillchains" were really needed for good damage, and so he invited his companions to a party. All were initially apprehensive; they had seen the horrors of techniques such as "Screwdriver" and "Sickle Slash". Could they really gain experience points while staying alive?
As the answer turned out to be, yes. News of this unusual and unique party configuration (called "manaburn" after the bard that complained that they were burning too much mana) spread to the furthest reaches of Vana'diel. Blinded by visions of Chain #6 350, black mages began to snub their less-magically-gifted allies in favor of these lucrative parties. Wanted both by HNM linkshells and all forms of parties alike, it was truly a Golden Age for Black Mages.
A New Age of Rampage
However, like all golden ages, they must come to an end. Frustrated attackers discovered that they didn't have to fight the toughest opponents; a monster slightly less difficult would do just as well. Furthermore, it was discovered that waiting for a partner's TP to perform a skillchain was wasteful and inefficient; it was better simply to unleash Weapon Skills as often as possible. Warriors, Monks, and Ninja found that Weapon Skills useless in skillchain configurations were, in all actuality, very damaging on their own - similar to a Black Magic spell - and with plenty of damage in between weapon skills. Thanks to the ninjutsu "Utsusemi", they could negate the fragility that had so often plagued them in their earlier days, so they could use weapon skills without worry.
Season of Bitterness
From being the most beloved job on Vana'diel, Black Mages suddenly found themselves the most hated in experience parties. Unable to cast more than a few spells at a time without resting MP back (and doing no damage in the meantime), Black Mages found themselves banished forever from merit parties. But it mattered not, for their manaburn parties were an alternative (if less efficient) form of meriting. Fortunately, Black Mages were not regulated to the ilk of pet jobs, as their spells proved valuable on extremely tough opponents of a notorious nature.
Rest In Peace
The real casualty in this paradigm shift was the Skillchain. Aside from the occasional (and much hated on Puks) Detonation, skillchains were soon obsoleted in experience points and HNM alike, being replaced by simply spamming Weapon Skills and spells respectively. Perhaps one day, skillchains will be an integral role of parties again....

While browsing FFXIclopedia, I read the Paralyze page. Driven by my WHM memories of KRT MNKs whining for Paralyna so they can WS, I updated the wiki to say that Paralyze did not affect weapon skills. Nynaeve then reverted me with no explanation in the summary or on the discussion page; I had to ask her on her talk page.
The discussion was rather interesting. Apparently, Nynaeve had seen some mob WS get paralyzed, and cited some examples she had come across while leveling. That was quite an interesting assertion, as in my years of leveling, I had never seen a mob's WS be paralyzed.
So, I did what any rational person would do and I asked BG. Scores of people agreed with me, and an ensuing flamewar raged on the talk page...with essentially one person, Nynaeve, vs. BG. One person took a screenshot of them using a paralyze potion (which is 100% paralyze) and recorded 30 straight procs before using a weapon skill...which wasn't paralyzed.
Nynaeve, unwilling to admit that she just might be wrong, preemptively protected the page with a Wikipedia-like-compromise. The page's summary now read:
It is generally believed that paralyze cannot prevent a player's weapon skill, although some players believe that it can happen very rarely. It is also believed that paralyze cannot prevent an enemies' special abilities and/or avatars' blood pact abilities. See the talk page for more discussion.
Another admin came along and unprotected the page, and another edit war ensued, mostly with "strongly" added as a modifier to "believe". After another topic started on BG complaining about misinformation being locked, the situation was resolved in a way I couldn't believe:
20:20, 19 February 2007 Ganiman (Talk | contribs) changed group membership for User:Nynaeve from JRSysop to (none)
00:57, 20 February 2007 Ganiman (Talk | contribs) unprotected "White Mage Guide by Nynaeve"
Not only was she desysopped, her prized White Mage guide was thrown to the wolves (i.e., editable by common folk). Interestingly, her protection edit summary foreshadowed her intentions:
00:32, 26 August 2006 Nynaeve (Talk | contribs) m (Protected "White Mage Guide by Nynaeve": I am now a Jr. Admin... My First Abuse of Power... No one touch my Guide. Thank you! Come again!! [edit=sysop:move=sysop])
All of this came about because of me asking for verification on BG.
So, Paralysis doesn't block weapon skills. However, it does seem to block Wiki admin privileges.
UPDATE: SHE QUIT THE WIKI LOL

I have /shouts and /says filtered to limit the sheer retardedness reaching my computer, but somehow the retards always manage to find a way. I've done nothing these past two months during my time on ffxi other than lfp and Dynamis. My RDM is in a rut now. Three years ago, finding a party at level 50 wouldn't have been such a chore. Today, with a large majority of the playerbase fighting over Puks for meriting, the leveling areas seem all but deserted (barring gilsellers). I tried partying with a linkshell mate, only to wind up with two people who needed G1 items and a gilseller WHM. One of the G1 people asked my linkshell mate to invite his gimped RDM friend, but he was ignored, lol. Yesterday, I joined a Japanese party, or so it would seem. JP parties don't invite NA members, they resort to them. As there was a shortage of tanks, the leader resorted to invite a NA NIN tank and his brother. The leader asked the party whether they wanted to go to KRT or Kuftal. The NA tank, in classic sheep fashion, said "Kuftal". In retrospect, I'm not even sure why the leader asked the PT where to go. Gee, a camp with 3 parties or a camp with ZERO parties. I can't choose, can you? So off to Kuftal the party heads, and we soon arrive and engage our first crab. The battle becomes an epic struggle for life and death, as is the norm for level 50 parties leveling off of crabs. After the battle, the tank and his brother D/C on purpose. I wonder if they've been reading my livejournal.... So the leader decides to forge ahead to CN where we would fight Helm Beetles. Along the way, the leader picks up another NA tank and COR. After a couple of chains (that is, chain #2), the NIN asked for Ninja Roll. I don't claim to be an expert on Ninja tactics, but let's look at what we're doing again. - We are fighting Helm Beetles, which have ZERO moves that strip shadows
- The NIN is being Hasted and Erased
- The beetle has slow+elegy+paralyze on
And somehow, the NIN is getting smacked into orange. With those facts in mind, I took that as the cue to disconnect, both for sleep and to ponder a better way of getting exp.

5:56 pm - Re: Party seeking update
|
Selecting every party option will not help you get a party faster. The above comment, though extreme, is how I interpret someone who selects every flag.
I'm not really sure what this update was trying to fix, given that the German and French speakers are fluent enough in English to get by. You won't see a "G ONLY" or a "F ONLY" pt, why? Because it's only the Japanese that do that, and the reason is because they hate gaijin - aka anyone who doesn't speak Japanese. Unless, of course, you're one of the wanted jobs. Yorosiku, NA bard-sama.
I'm not sure what got mistranslated, but the "Language" help text isn't referring what language-speaking parties you prefer, it's about what languages you can speak, a point that should have become obvious while reading the "Other" help text.
Expect a number of polyglots in the coming months. By the way, my friend is Lithuanian, where's the "L" option?

- Play Battlefield 2/some other FPS
For the past three weeks, I've spent more times making smartass remarks on FFXI forums than actually playing the game. There's just nothing to do - no time to level another job, no inclination to get +1attack on that Minuet from meripo, no desire to camp H/NMs.
Is it just me or is there a mass quitting going on?

8:54 pm - STAND TALL PUPS
|
|
Long have I been a Black Mage amongst the lands of Vana'diel, studying and training hard to become the best that I could among the rank of fellow Black Mages around me. After dedicated hardwork and practice I had obtained the impossible -AF2, and the most testing piece and yet most fulfilling... the Moldavite Earring Though something was missing, I couldn't quite place my finger on it. But I would roam along Rolanberry Fields in thought.
Along my typical route in the Fields I saw a figure along the horizon, walking valiantly along his side was a Valor Edge. I blinked as I saw yet another coming from the opposite hill, as they passed one another, I saw both these adventurers stop for a mere moment nothing longer. It was a silent mutual understanding as they both saluted one another and continued along their way. Days later, as I walked through Jeuno, I saw the same silent code of honor among these warriors labeled as Puppetmasters. There was something oddly satisfying as I watched these Puppetmasters treat their fellow brethren with the utmost respect. That was the day I laid down my staff, and picked up the Sainti of the Puppetmaster. It is and will be the best decision I've ever made in Vana'diel. No matter what fellow adventurers think of us, we stand proud with our Puppets standing tall, ever vigilant and ever faithful...
Shamelessly ripped from this tirade
The only changes I did was replace "Dragoon" with "Puppetmaster" and "wyvern" with puppet, along with general grammar fixes. Though it was written in 2004, it's just as applicable to those PUPs out there.
